There’s a certain confidence to Crime 101. From its opening moments, the film signals that it wants to sit comfortably beside the great modern crime dramas, sleek, controlled, and simmering with professional tension. Directed by Bart Layton and led by Chris Hemsworth, this California-set thriller follows a meticulous jewel thief orchestrating high-end robberies along the 101 freeway. It looks impressive. It sounds impressive. But despite all its polish, it rarely feels essential. Hemsworth plays Mike Davis, a disciplined professional who approaches crime like a craftsman. The atmosphere recalls crime classics like Heat, where professionalism and obsession blur into one another. Layton clearly understands the aesthetic of this genre, and he leans into it confidently.
The supporting cast helps elevate the material. Ruffalo brings warmth and dimension to his detective, making Lubesnick more than just a generic pursuer. Halle Berry, playing an insurance executive drawn into the scheme, adds emotional texture to a character wrestling with professional limitations and moral compromise. Even in smaller moments, the performances feel grounded and believable.
Where Crime 101 struggles is at its center. Hemsworth plays Mike as emotionally closed-off and rigid, which may be intentional, but it creates distance between the character and the audience. Mystery can be compelling, but here it often feels like emptiness. We understand Mike’s methods, but we rarely understand his inner life. When asked what motivates him, the answer is simply “money.” That bluntness might be honest, but it doesn’t create depth.
